Music is an important part of the school curriculum at St Andrew's. Class music lessons are taught from Nursery to Year 8 by specialist teachers. Every child in Years 2 and 3 is taught the recorder, so that they acquire the skill to read music. All children in Year 2 are offered a free term's lessons in a group on violin or 'cello.
We actively encourage children to learn an instrument - it's not only stimulating and fun but the discipline of playing an instrument greatly improves a child's concentration, co-ordination and memory skills. Music lessons in the following are available as an extra: all string instruments; all brass instruments; flute, oboe, clarinet and saxophone; piano, singing, guitar and drumkit.
Many children participate in extra-curricular music in choirs, wind band, orchestra, string groups, rock bands and recorder groups. Regular concerts, both formal and informal, are organised throughout the year culminating in a major musical serenade in the summer term.
